Personal Statement
“If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed” – A quote by one of my idols Stanley
Kubrick and something I’ve always resonated with. Before I started my studying, I was creating things using camera phones and spent countless hours meticulously watching movies again and
again. For me, the best films are experiences. It’s why I love watching director’s cuts,
gaining inside knowledge into how the creative process works. It only made sense that I would
continue my development at university. Through undertaking a Creative Media Production course
in college, it gave me the tools to create an outlet for my ideas as well as giving me the
space to rethink the way I viewed filming from a critical lens. The hardworking nature and
long days weren’t an issue for me as the motivation to get things right and support from
teachers made it a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
From studying within college, I developed a sense of structure, continuity and an appreciation
for the different facets of film production that I hadn’t considered. It’s also given me a
sense of deadline and shows the importance of prioritizing projects over others. I love
working with other people, sharing ideas, brainstorming and coming to a healthy compromise
that everyone agrees on. My technical knowledge includes: Adobe Premier Pro for editing video,
Photoshop for images and After Effects for specialism. I am always developing, learning and
improving my skills from pre-production, right through to the post-production process. In my
year group, I’m known to have one of the best eyes for cinematography, framing and compositing
shots.
During the summer of 2017, I had three days of work experience at LAMDA University working in
the theatre department creating sets for an end of year production. It was slightly outside of
my comfort zone and much more hands on than anything in my studies, however it showed the
scale of theatre, how much detail is required for each scene and it gave me my first insight
into the level required for university. Due to being brought up in London, I’ve been
privileged to have amazing independent cinemas within easy reach. For the past two years I’ve
been a member of The Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square and their commitment to shining
a light on lesser known work and their unique Q&A events make it one of the best venues in the
capital.
I’m hardworking, determined and have a positive approach to problem solving and I think I
would make a perfect candidate for this course and university. From broadening my learning to
taking advantage of a myriad of opportunities as I grow, I believe moving forward in this
course is the right choice in continuing my development.
